Your Ex-Lover is Dead

Best song I heard today because it makes me impossibly wistful. If you can listen to this song without getting some sort of pang for someone you might have once had feelings for in your life, then you, my friend, are a robot. Also the video makes me think of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and then I get all weepy and meet-me-in-Montauk-y and I wish I could dye my hair blue. Anyhow, this song rules.

Runaway Train

Best song I heard today because you cannot hear this song without thinking of the video. It's simply impossible. This video is burned into my head for the rest of ETERNITY. It still gives me the creeps when that old man climbs into that car with the hooker baby. Anyhow, if you have yourself a spare twenty minutes, it's quite an experience to Google some of the names of the missing kids from the video. Some happy endings, most not. Videos just don't do these kinds of things anymore. There's no social element to them. Don't get me wrong, videos can still kick ass, as I was responsible for about 8,328 views of Bad Romance back in November. But the gut punch you get from this video? Doesn't happen anymore.

Bedrock

Best song I heard today because any song that can reference the following in one song is amazing: Michael Jackson, Red Bull, Stevie Wonder, sushi, Shake and Bake, Ricky Bobby, Aaliyah, Aston Martins, ESPN, Oxygen network, the W hotel, Neyo, and of course, Fred Flintstone. Also, how did it take so long for someone to make a "bed rock" joke in a rap song? It's almost mindblowing.

Monsters and Angels

"Cause there is sugar. And there is salt.
And there is ice and there is fire, in every single heart."

So profound. Best song I heard today because it came into my head OUT OF COMPLETE NOWHERE this morning. That shit kind of freaks me out sometimes. What else is in there all latent and creeperton from when I was 12 years old?

C U When U Get There

Best song I heard today because I am a complete and total sucker for rap songs that appropriate classical music (in this case, Pachelbel's Canon in D), even though I can't really think of any others besides "I Know I Can" by Nas and that song makes me cry for reasons unknown. Anyway, unlike its 1997 contemporary, Bone Thugs' "Tha Crossroads," this song is not really about seeing you when you get there in the afterlife, but being able to relate to you once you get your mind right, fool. When Coolio wasn't bringing folks to the beach in the trunk of a magical hoopty, he was trying to lift up the young people of the world. I miss Coolio.

Ever hear a song...

...whether on your iPod, on Pandora, strolling through the mall, in the bathroom at a bar, at a sporting event, or even through some douche's headphones on the train, and think to yourself,

"Shit! I love this song! This has made me so happy. This might be the best song I've heard today."

No? Well fine, maybe it's just me.

But I bet it's not. We all have those moments, don't even play, that's why you're here.
